braking systems (disc brakes, drum brakes, and anti-lock brakes ABS)
and can advise you on the proper care to ensure your vehicle has
safe and Dependable brakes.
If you have
neglected to have your brakes inspected recently or are experiencing
poor braking performance have your braking system inspected by a
qualified service professional.
How your brakes work
The braking system
is a hydraulic system which includes:
- master cylinder : Fluid is sent from
the master cylinder to each brake when the brake pedal is
depressed.
- brake fluid : A special hydraulic
fluid that is sent through the brake lines.
- brake lines : Mostly steel tubes and some
rubber, brake lines direct the brake fluid to each brake on the
vehicle.
- parking brake/ emergency brake : This
system bypasses the hydraulic system in case of complete hydraulic
failure.
Make sure you have
the brake fluid changed about every 2 years.
Your service
technician can check your brake pads or brake shoes for wear and
advise on when they should be replaced.
If you hear a
squealing noise when you apply the brakes do not ignore it.
This is a warning device telling you that your brake pad or shoes
need to be replaced immediately. It is dangerous to drive with
severly warn brake pads or shoes.
Use your parking
brake often because it keeps your brakes properly
adjusted.
